Hanging & Care
all artwork is designed and made in canada and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. all artwork is finished by hand, therefore some variation between the same product can occur.
Hanging
many of jack & sparrows artwork comes ready to hang using 12mm deep hanging blocks that are attached to the back of each work. these make the artwork “pop” out from the wall for added impact. art can be hung using screws, nails or hooks (not included), liquid nails, 3m picture hanging strips (indoor use only) or external foam tape.
please ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the appropriate number of screws or hooks or tape, dependent on the size and weight of your art.
artwork must be hung on the longest hanging block as this is the load bearing block. words eg. hello, home and family-names are designed to be hung vertically, reading either up or down.
rope artwork is designed to be hung on a hook or wall dot – using the rope. any blocks on the back are not load bearing, they are to ensure artwork lies evenly against the wall. they can be secured with blu tack or hanging strips, as required. there are so many fabulous ways to tie the rope so have fun experimenting!
address and personalized signs come with 5mm holes – to hang with screws (not included). they can also be hung with standoff wall mounts to make them pop off the wall. standoffs are sold separately and must be ordered at the time of purchase as require larger holes in the sign.
sign mount attachments are included with most black, white, gold or brushed stainless steel house numbers (unless the number is too small)
attach the clear nipple part of the mount to the back of your number/s with liquid nails, gorilla glue, epoxy or similar for exterior use on powdercoated metal and plastic. ensure you let the glue cure fully before hanging.
use chalk or felt tip pen on the nipple and press on the wall/letterbox/fence to get the placement for the cups. screw the cups into place and the nipple clicks into the cup.Â
alternatively, use baking paper to trace the numbers (as you will hang them) and mark on the paper where you have attached the nipple part of the sign mount. tape the paper where you will be hanging the numbers, and you will have the placement to screw the cups.Â
alternatively, the numbers can be left plain and you can attach with liquid nails, or exterior foam tape.
Care
jack & sparrow uses high grade 304 quality stainless steel for all black, white, gold and yellow collections. artwork has a dulux “electro” coating on front and sides – a uv resistant durable product designed for architectural use. art can be wiped clean with a clean damp cloth then dried with a clean dry cloth.
this is the same grade of stainless steel as a high end bbq and has a far greater resistance to corrosion than mild steel or galvanised steel. like windows, your art may need periodic rinsing with clean water, to wash off sea-salt deposits that may cause corrosion over time.
jack & sparrow’s brushed stainless designs use high grade 316 marine grade quality stainless steel. stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and staining, low maintenance, and attractive lustre make it an ideal choice for indoor or outdoor art.
a complimentary “brilliance” wipe is included with your purchase to enhance your art, as required. the brilliance non-toxic wipe cleans and shines, leaving a protective coating against smudging, markings, and finger prints on stainless steel.
apply brilliance, as needed, wiping with the grain. leave on for 5 minutes then wipe dry with paper/soft cloth.
additional wipes are available through quality hardware stores.
this is the same grade of stainless steel used in marine environments however, like with windows, your sign does need maintenance to keep it at its best and free from tea staining.
wash regularly with clean fresh water, mild detergent and a cloth or soft brush. after washing rinse in clean water and wipe the surface dry with a soft absorbent cloth remembering to go with the grain on brushed stainless steel. generally you should wash your stainless steel every time you wash your windows or every three months. do not use abrasive cleaners or a scouring pad of any type as they may cause excessive wear and dull the finish. even stainless steel finishes in coastal environments may show tea staining if not washed regularly.
Marleen exclusively employs 3mm corten steel for her exceptional corten creations. Corten steel, renowned for its corrosion-resistant properties, undergoes a unique transformation when exposed to the elements. Over time, an outer layer patina develops, acting as a natural shield against further corrosion. Marleen’s corten works boast a striking appearance, with the evolving patina enhancing their aesthetic allure. Regularly giving them a gentle sanding ensures their enduring magnificence.
The process of achieving the complete rust layer and sealing of corten steel requires time, particularly with outdoor exposure. Optimal sealing and weathering occur when the steel is exposed to alternating cycles of moisture and dryness. Depending on factors like climate and placement, there might be a minor rust runoff during this phase, especially if the artwork is in contact with a surface.
For accelerated rusting, Marleen’s art can be exposed to frequent water or even seawater sprays. Alternatively, those who prefer to maintain the current appearance of the artwork can choose to coat it with penetrol, a product available at reputable hardware stores. This protective coating halts the rusting process, allowing the artwork to retain its intended look at any stage of its evolution.
